Analogues

Protoplanet is uniting international space and climate experts to reconvene in Ladakh for Spaceward Bound India 2025. Spaceward Bound is an international program active since 2007 to train the next generation of space explorers by integrating educational and research-focused exploration of scientifically interesting but remote and extreme environments on Earth as analogues for human exploration of the Moon and beyond. The program has earlier been held in US, Australia, New Zealand, Namibia and was first held in Ladakh, India in 2016 led by several current Protoplanet members. Ladakh offers unique and diverse naturally occurring remote sites such as hot springs, permafrost, saline lakes that allow a broad range of training and scientific activities. The scientific findings from such expeditions directly inform the development of experiments and payloads for future planetary science missions.

Building on 8 years of research and collaborations, Protoplanet is conducting a 12-day field programme within a 3-month activity period in Ladakh in 2025. The aim is to integrate the planetary science, robotic and human spaceflight communities along with a strong focus on site conservation and public engagement. The program aims to deliver hands-on, science-driven outcomes, leveraging insights from previous explorations and new partnerships with industry to enhance learning experiences for students, researchers, and educators alike. More information on the team, partners, and activities will be shared in due time.
